BUT THE WATER IS CRYSTAL CLEAR!
Very often a swimming pool looks beautiful, and makes you want to just jump straight in.
On occasions though, this lovely clear looking pool may have the water balance quite wrong - and sometimes dangerously so.
Most people do get their water management right. They either test their own water at home or take a water sample to their local pool shop and have it professionally tested. It is important to know what to use, exactly how chemicals react together, and how to use them safely.
So it is important to ask all the questions you need answered. here are some of them:
- I've never been told to use that before!
If you have your water tested, the tester should be able to explain what is being recommended and why. You should also be told the long term effects of not using it.
- I've never heard of that before. Do I really need it?
If your pool water requires a chemical you have never heard of or used before, ask "Why?" Properly trained staff will have no problem explaining.
- My mate said to just put a cup of acid in once every week and chlorine in twice a week. Is that right?
What is it with mates?. You'd be rich if you had a dollar for every time that one is said. A good mate is great to have - but a good pool shop is even better! You should take a sample of pool water to a pool shop and have it tested correctly. Not all pools are the same, and yours will probably require different treatment.
- I had my pool tested, and I put in everything I was told to put in, but now it's cloudy! What's gone wrong?
Always make sure you have a clear understanding of your water test results, and always get a print-out. Follow the procedures for adding the chemicals, and always allow the right waiting period between adding different chemicals. Cloudiness can sometimes occur as a reaction between two or more chemicals added too quickly. The cloudiness should filter out over 4 - 6 hours. If it doesn't, contact your store.
- How often should I test the water?
In short as often as you need. Generally that is weekly in summer and monthly in winter. It's really important that you have a clear understanding of your pool and its water balance.
- Can I test my own water by myself at home?
YES! You can. There are several different test you can use. The most common home test is carried out by using test strips. Dip and read. "Four in One" test kits are also available. These require a little more effort to work out the results - but they do come with instructions. These home tests should be used as a guide only. If your test results are not clear, or you're not sure, always consult with your pool professional
- I have a heap of pool chemicals at home? I don't know what they are. How do I handle them?
Take a photo of them, or pack them up and take them to your pool shop. Most dry chemical have a shelf life of 5 years, so we can check your bundle and let you know which can be used.
Proper water treatment is the key to enjoying the rich benefits of swimming pool ownership. Taking shortcuts usually produces poor results, and in rare cases, can make your pool dangerous to swim in. Test your water regularly and thoroughly. Better still, have it tested by a professional!
