The backyard swimming pool has be become an iconic part of the Aussie family home and life. But that's no surprise when you consider how hot our climate is. All the same, we do have cooler days, and there is winter too!
So it makes sense to gain maximum value from the investment in that pool. You can do that by making the water warmer, and extending your swimming season. Heating a pool provides the opportunity to use it more often, so creating greater value-for-money in more ways then one.
Warmer water means a 'holiday feel' at home, with quality, 'family time' while you're having fun and making 'forever memories'.
You can do that by Installing a heat pump - it's the best and most cost effective way. Investing in a heat pump is predominately favoured for the convenience it offers.
Read on to discover more about heating pools and heat pumps.
HAVING A HEATED POOL
Enjoying a warm pool!
Having a heated pool can mean a lot to you:
- No chilly water means swimmers can enjoy the pool longer
- Pool heating maintains a constant water temperature
- People wanting to swim early in the morning or late into the evening can do so.
- Cold spots don't form, and that's particularly helpful if you have a deeper pool.
- With a heat pump, it's heat on demand
- Pool heating can add value to your property
WHEN CONSIDERING POOL HEATING
You'll need to think hard about these points:
- When looking at investing in pool heating consider all the options available - electric, gas, solar, and heat pumps
- Remember that heat pumps can save up to 80% of running costs, when compared to traditional gas water heating
- Consider your own individual needs. Pool owners all have different ways to use their pools
- What is your main goal?
-
- Do you require comfort all year round?
- Or would you prefer 'heat-on-demand'?
- Or are you looking for only a 'season extender'?
-
- Choose high quality products that offer cost effectiveness, quality components, and a reliable warranty
- Make your purchase from a reputable retailer
COST EFFECTIVENESS OF TODAY'S HEAT PUMPS
Here is a simplified break down of energy consumption for a pool heat pump:
- A normal, average, electric kettle in a kitchen, uses power at the rate of 2.4 kW
- A normal, average I HP pool pump uses power at the rate of 1 kW
- A normal average 9kW Heat pump uses power at the rate of 1.4kW
Why is it so?
That nominal '9kW' heat pump for a pool provides heat energy to the pool at the rate of 8.4kW. This is because, unlike the kitchen kettle which burns electricity, converting it to heat to boil the water, the heat pump uses its electrical energy to move massive amounts of heat from the air around you, into the pool water.
This ratio of heat energy pumped into the water, compared with the electric energy used, is called the Coefficient Of Performance (COP). It measures how effective the pump is at using electricity to move heat - that is, pump heat from the air into your pool water.
New generation heat pumps typically can deliver more than 6.2 times the heat into your pool, than the amount of electrical energy used, with an air temperature of 26°. This is expressed as a COP of 6.2.
New Generation Inverter HEAT PUMPS
A few years ago only a few people had electric pool heat pumps.
Modern Inverter
The majority of pool heating used solar pool heating of the black-mat variety. Although it proved effective in heating, it wasn't 'heat-on-demand' and it wasn't as effective on a cloudy day. The system was prone to cockatoo attacks, while some systems even detached from roof tops in strong winds.
The rising cost of electricity, and the introduction of domestic solar PV electricity generation, has seen a further decline in the demand for traditional mat-style solar pool heating..
The last five years has seen the introduction of 'inverter-based' heat pumps. These use the latest in electrical engineering technology and modern materials, creating quieter, and more energy-efficient, heat pumps. This change has brought about a huge increase in demand for this type of domestic pool heating.
